LITURGICAL LIFE
"Nevertheless the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows. For the aim and object of apostolic works is that all who are made sons of God by faith and baptism should come together to praise God in the midst of His Church, to take part in the sacrifice, and to eat the Lord's supper."

FUNERALS

What to do: When someone in your family dies, please call the pastor as soon as possible. The funeral liturgy is generally prepared by the pastor with members of the family. Parishioners are urged to have a funeral liturgy outline on file at the parish. For more information on this, call the pastor. Our local funeral homes are very cooperative with us and understand our catholic tradition. Every effort is made to accommodate families at these moments.
The Funeral Mass: It is possible to have a wake (vigil) in the church or at the funeral home prior to the Liturgy of Christian Burial. This can be in the evening or morning. Generally cemeteries do not allow burial later than 3:00 PM. Sometimes there is a desire for a family member or friend to speak a eulogy. It is our custom that this is best done at the Funeral Vigil or prior to beginning the Liturgy of Christian Burial. Eulogies are not allowed during the Mass itself. The pastor will explain this in detail at your request. Every effort is made to also be present for the burial if it is in the area.
Cremation: Cremation is allowed. Generally this takes place after the Liturgy of Christian Burial. When this is the preference, it is the expectation of the Church that the ashes be buried, not scattered.
Funeral Reception: There is a parish Bereavement Committee which assists at funerals. This group is happy to provide a light lunch/reception following the funeral Mass. They can prepare for groups of approximately seventy-five persons. If you expect more than that number and wish to use the parish facilities (no charge), a caterer must be obtained. You will be asked the approximate number of persons expected for the reception and whether or not you would like wine to be served. The only charge from the parish for this service is for the meat and the wine. Other: Every effort is made to follow both good Catholic liturgical norms and good taste. Your pastor will assist you in these preparations. Occasionally there are requests that are better accommodated at a Vigil Service than at the Mass itself. This would include: eulogies, certain musical requests, etc.
