Philosophy of Education
I believe every child should receive a strong educational foundation, a foundation that will include a child's social, emotional, and academic growth. A child should be taught under the direction of an interested, motivated, and creative teacher. He/She should be excited about learning and given a variety of experiences to develop this strong foundation.

Curriculum Summary

Religion
We receive two sacraments in the second grade: 1st Reconciliation and 1st Communion. We use the book “Reconciliation: The Good Shepherd” and the book “We Believe and Celebrate First Communion”. We use the magazine called “Weekly Gospels” to learn about the mass. We also meet with the parish priest.

Reading/Literature
We use Scholastic's "Literacy Place" series which is rich in literature, teaches vocabulary, comprehension, and phonics skills. Phonics is enhanced with the Modern Curriculum Press book. We participate in the National Reading program called "Book It" sponsored by Pizza Hut.

Language Arts
We use the Curriculum Associates "Spelling Power" series. It incorporates spelling, writing, and English skills. We use the D'Nealian handwriting method. Students learn cursive writing in the second semester.

Mathematics
Our Houghton Mifflin series uses manipulatives, cooperative learning and skill development. We memorize the addition and subtraction facts. We work on the skills of telling time, money, number patterns, measurement, geometry, carrying and borrowing.

Science
We use the FOSS science program. FOSS stands for Full Option Science System. The FOSS program teaches students through inquiries, investigation, and analysis. Our modules are (1) solids and liquids (2) air and weather (3) new plants.

Social Studies
We use the Houghton Mifflin series. Our studies include the neighborhood, communities, families, our country, famous Americans, holidays, maps, general history, and current events.

Other Classroom News
We are able to take several field trips including a children's theater, nature centers, and the art museum. We have specialists for Spanish, Music, Gym, Art, Library, Guidance, and Computer classes.
