Philosophy of Education
“Growing In Christ”, our ’07-’08 school theme, is exemplified in the creativity exhibited in the art room. We share, respect one another, give all that God has blessed us with through self-expression. Each day in class, learning is taking place. Learning to be an individual, to give of one’s self. The student’s work, they question, learn about other artists and cultural arts. They appreciate the effort put forth by fellow classmates. That is my mission as a teacher of Art. I look forward to guiding my students in seeing what God has given to us to make this world a wonderful place filled with color, and light, and textures, shapes and forms. Each of these gifts is unique and special like each student.

Curriculum Summary

Primary

Students in grades 1-3 are given many materials to experience during art classes. They learn skills and techniques that may be new to them. The students are given demonstrations and directions for the activity and may create with their own, personal ideas and expressions. I relate themes to the activities that they are familiar with in their every day lives and in classroom learning experiences. Art history is introduced and art from other countries and cultures is incorporated in many art activities.

Intermediate

Students in grades 4-5 are introduced to new materials and techniques during art class. The skills learned in primary grades are now improved upon and more involved activities are learned. 2D and 3D lessons become more advanced. Art, from the cultures being taught in Social Studies, has more prominence to the students at this level. A variety of styles of art are introduced.

Middle School

The students at this level have a good grasp of art material use and art techniques. They are able to make more advanced choices in expressing their thoughts and feelings in art activities. Many of the lessons being taught are related to the art of the cultures being taught in social studies and other academic areas of studies. Students learn about many styles of art. We work more extensively with the styles of abstraction, impressionism, contemporary, expressionism, realism. Self portraits are a focus as well as themes related to their interests.
